Mrs. Matt's Grade 3/4 Bridge Building -April 14, 2011
The Grade 3/4 class had a very exciting day this week when we held our much-anticipated bridge building contest. Their assignment was to build a bridge to span 45cm and hold one brick, but the real challenge was to hold the most weight in the competition. A "store" was set up in the classroom with a variety of building materials (cardboard, popsicle sticks, styrofoam, straws, toilet paper rolls etc). The kids had a budget they could not exceed and had to keep track of their costs.
Every bridge held the brick without a problem, but that was just the beginning. We piled on 10 bricks. If it held all 10, we added a cinder block. If the bridge held all that we had a Grade 2 student sit on the bridge. The winners were Tayler and Jocelyne, whose bridge even held Mrs. Matt!!! |

During the event students had to construct a tower that could hold as many tennis balls as possible as well as withstand Lethbridge's chinook winds (i.e. a fan). All of the teams did very well. Special Congratulations go out to the team of Holden Heppler, Austin Baron, Blaine Campbell and David Bolokoski who came away with two prizes: Tallest Tower and Best Teamwork.
